India – Passport and Visa required


 

 

TOURIST

  • Valid and signed U. S. Passport (valid at least 6 months beyond the date of entry; with at least one blank visa page)  – photocopy is not acceptable

  • One Visa Application Form (MUST be completed ON-LINE, print and then sign). In additon to the visa application form, one supplemental applicantInformation Form is also required (Effective January 18, 2010).  NOTE: Minor Applicants: The visa application must be signed by both parents and a copy of both parents' signed passports must be submitted.  If the parents do not have a passport, please submit copy of both parents birth certificates. 

  • Two Passport Type Photographs (NO GLASSES TO BE WORN ON ANY PHOTO)

  • Computer generated flight itinerary from the travel agent or copy of roundtrip airline ticket

  • Proof of residential address in the United States:  Please submit a clear copy of applicant's Driver’s License, Utility Bill or Phone Bill.  Address on the document cannot include a P.O Box number and Must Match present address on the visa application form. The following items are NOT accepted: cell phone bill, credit card statement, bank statement or lease. 

  • photocopy of the applicant's birth certificate (effective Jan. 15, 2010) NOTE: Any birth certificate that do not originate from the US or India must be translated into English and must be notarized.  Indian Born Applicants: Those born in India can use their birth certificate, old Indian passport or school leaving certificate.

  • Service Order Form

NOTE: 

  • Special Re-Entry Instructions: Indian visas allow multiple entries into the country, however, there must be a gap of at least 2 months between two visits to the country on a Tourist Visa.
  • In order to Reenter India within 2 months of first entry a Re-Entry Permit is required. Tourists who intend to enter India more than once due largely on account of neighborhood tourism related travel and reenter India before finally exiting the region, may be issued a permit for two to three entries.
  • In order to apply for the Re-Entry permit you will need in addition to all requirement detailed above:
    • Visa application form - One Visa Application Form (MUST be completed ON-LINE, print and then sign)
    • Permit Support Letter: A letter is needed to support two points:  
    • a) The letter must highlight the urgency of the visit and the purpose of the visit must be for recreation/sightseeing, casual visit to meet friends and relatives/others (to be specified).
    • b) The applicant may not be engaged in Business Activities/Employment or pursuing studies/research, etc. In such cases, registration would be required within 14 days of arrival.
  • Re-Entry Exemption Form: Completed and signed by the applicant
  • Additional fees to apply for the Re-Entry Permit do apply, these fees are in addition to the Visa Fees. (See Below).

Consular Fee:    

  • 6 Month Multiple Entry Tourist visa fee will be $73.00
  • 5 Year Multiple Entry Tourist visa fee will be $163.00
  • 10 Year Multiple Entry Tourist visa fee will be $163.00
  • Re-Entry Permit fee: $42.00/person

 BUSINESS

  • Business letter written on your company’s letterhead addressed to the Embassy of India. This letter should indicate the applicant’s name, position in the company, nature of business to be conducted in India, name and address of contact in India, length of stay and the number of entries requested.  It should also state that the company would be financially responsible for the applicant’s living expenses including roundtrip transportation, and should be signed by someone other than the applicant. (NOTE:  Please indicate the visa validity you are requiring - example: 6 months, 1 year, 5 years or 10 years) 

  • Letter of invitation from the sponsoring organization in India, typed on the organization's letterhead and stating all of the following:
    • The nature of the applicant's business;
    • The probable duration of stay in India;
    • Statement requesting visa validity required - example: 6 months, 1 year, 5 years or 10 years (should match application question #25);
    • Places and organizations to be visited in India;
    • Guarantee sufficient financial support for the visit.
  • Service Order Form

NOTE: If you are applying for a conference visa:

  1. Ministry of Home Affairs Clearance: A clearance letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  2. Ministry of External Affairs Clearance: A clearance letter from the Ministry of External Affairs.
  3. State Government/UT Clearance: A clearance letter from the State Government/Union Territories.
  4. Nodal Ministry Clearance: A clearance letter from the Ministry that holds jurisdiction over the conference. Example, an education conference needs a clearance letter from the Ministry of Education
In the case that the conference/seminar/workshop is being organized in India by private companies the applicant should apply for the shortest duration Business visa available. If approved, a 3 month single entry Business visa will be granted.

Consular Fee:     

  • 6 Month Multiple Entry Business visa will not be granted
  • 1 Year Multiple Entry Business visa fee will be $173.00
  • 5 Year Multiple Entry Business visa fee will be $253.00
  • 10 Year Multiple Entry Business visa fee will be $253.00

ENTRY

Applicant is a person of Indian Origin Applicant is a spouse or dependent child of a person of Indian origin. Applicant is a spouse or dependent family member of a foreign national coming to India on long term visa such as Employment, Business, Research or Student. In such cases, the visa duration granted is co-terminus with the period of the principal visa holder.

Applicants of Indian Origin and Dependant Family Member.

  • Persons of Indian Origin must renounce their citizenship if they have not already done so in order to apply for a visa.
  • If the applicant has already renounced Indian citizenship, one of the following must be produced as proof.
    1) Certificate of Renounciation issunced by a Consulate of India or,
    2) An Indian Passport that contains a stamp that specifically renounces the citizenship.
  • If the applicant has NOT renounced their Indian citizenship, or cannot show proof, the following must be provided:
    1) Completed Renunciation Form.
    2) Renounciation fee of $175 paid with a separate Money Order payable to Embassy of India.
    3) Copy of the Naturalization Certificate.
    4) Actual Indian Passport. If the applicant does not have the passport, the applicant must provide a police report that shows the passport as lost or stolen.
  • Persons of Indian Origin may not apply to Transfer a Tourist Visa. They must apply for an Entry Visa.

Spouse or Child of Business, Research or Student Visa Holder

  • Must submit documents establishing the employment of the spouse along with a copy of his/her Employment Visa.

  • 5 Years Visa - $253.00/person

EMPLOYMENT (Work)

Is required for Non-Profit Organizations or Charity volunteers. Is now required of business travelers who may engage in employment activities or those who are an employee of an Indian company.

    • Valid and signed U. S. Passport (valid at least 6 months beyond the date of entry; with at least one blank visa page)  – photocopy is not acceptable

    • One Visa Application Form (MUST be completed ON-LINE, print and then sign). In addition to the visa application form, one supplemental applicantInformation Form is also required  (Effective January 18, 2010).

    • Two Passport Type Photographs (NO GLASSES TO BE WORN ON ANY PHOTO)

    • photocopy of the applicant's birth certificate (effective Jan. 15, 2010) NOTE: Any birth certificate that do not originate from the US or India must be translated into English and must be notarized.  Indian Born Applicants: Those born in India can use their birth certificate, old Indian passport or school leaving certificate.

    • Copy of the air travel itinerary showing departure from the USA

    • Proof of residential address in the United States: Please submit a clear copy of applicant's Driver’s License, Utility Bill or Phone Bill.  Address on the document cannot include a P.O Box number and Must Match present address on the visa application form. The following items are NOT accepted: cell phone bill, credit card statement, bank statement or lease.

    • Justification Letter: A letter from the employer in India certifying that applicant is a skilled and qualified professional, technical expert, senior executive or in a managerial position. This letter should also justify as to how those kinds of skills are not available in India.

    • Service Order Form
    • Employment Details Form: One completed Employment Details Form.
    • Sponsor Letter: Those intending to volunteer, work with charities or non-profit organizations should submitt an invitation letter from the sponsoring organization indicating intended destination in India, expected length of stay and nature of work should be attached along with a guarantee for applicants maintainance whil in India.
      This letter must be addressed to:

      Additional Requirements

        Appointment Letter: A letter provided by the applicants employer certifying that the applicant has been offered a position with the company and outlining the nature and duration of the position.
        Contract: A copy of the complete employment contract. The contract must contain details of the salary agreement and the signature of both parties.
        Resume: The applicant's current resume.
        Organization Registration: Proof that the organization is registered in India, provided by the Indian employer.
        Tax Liability Letter: A tax liability letter from the company in India which must certify the following details:
        1) Foreigners being hired will not exceed 1% of total workforce.
        2) Within 1%, Foreigners should not exceed more than 20 employees.
        3) In case the number of employees is within 1% but more than 20, applicants should understand that there may be a delay in decisions made on the issuance of the visa.
